Expedition kit: electricals

Good grief… I just collected together all the electrical equipment I plan to take with me on my elephant expedition to Nepal next week. Forgive the bad focusing – I think I was suffering from shock when I took the photo!

This includes:

  • a laptop and electrical cable
  • a camcorder with spare batteries, cables and a charger with interchangeable plugs
  • a directional mike with dead cat and extension cable
  • a lapel mike
  • a hybrid camera with long lens (being used to take the shot)
  • mid lens plus pancake lens in lens bag
  • camera cables, spare battery, charger and spare memory card
  • spare digital camera with spare battery, cable and case
  • bendy tripod
  • voice recorder with spare batteries
  • mobile phone with USB charger cable
  • instruction leaflets
  • Kata shoulder bag for camera/camcorder

Luckily for me, this all packs away rather easily and isn’t as horrific as it looks. Additionally, as luck has it, the nifty Kata shoulder bag – purchased to keep my kit safe in the field, fits neatly into my carry-on bag.

Suddenly it all doesn’t seem quite so daft after all! I even have room left over for my passport, money, documents and a few snacks for the plane!

Dontcha love it when a plan comes together.

Videography and elephants

Videography and elephants

I have been given the role of videographer during my upcoming expedition to Nepal. I shall also be taking photographs. This means that I have to consider two major challenges:

  1. how to juggle a video camera and camera with a relatively large lens
  2. how to take stable video images from the back of a moving elephant

Juggling multiple cameras

I have done some research on how to juggle two cameras and have found several suggestions including various options for dual straps:

Any advice on which would be better for use onboard an elephant would be greatly appreciated.

Stabilizing video

While there are several software options for stabilizing video after the fact (see above), I would like to make sure that my shots are as stable as possible from the outset.

According to 3 Tips for Shooting Stable Video: By Jonny Rowen of Camtrol I will need to consider a balanced camera mount, how to avoid ‘shooter fatigue’, and some form of camera stabilizer. However, this advice is rather non-specific! Bradly Steenkamp’s ‘Going Steady’ on the other hand offers three technical solutions across a reasonable price range:

I’m leaning towards the Gorillapod as the most flexible option but would appreciate any advice from experienced videographers.

How do you get better video from the back of an elephant?

Nkorho Pan live camera!

As I post this, there are three lion cubs dancing around in front of the live camera at Nkorho Pan!

Sorry about the 30 second advert up front, but it’s well worth living through it. Hopefully the cubs will still be there when you log in!

For other live safari cameras and bird hide cameras, check out the main Africam.com website.
